Erode Town is the head quarters of Erode District, which was bifurcated from the composite Coimbatore District since the year 1979. This town was constituted as a Municipality in the year 1871 and was elevated to Special Grade during the year 1980.
The Municipality consists of Erode, Surampatti, Peelamedu, Sarkar Chinna Agraharam revenue villages. Total area of the Municipality is 8.44 Sq.Km. Erode Corporation is surrounded by Kasipalayam, Surampatti, Veerappan Chathiram, B.P.Agraharam Town Panchayats.
The Town has been divided into 45 Electroral wards and 15 Sanitary Divisions. As per the 1991 census population of the Municipality was 1,59,232 and as per 2001 population is 1,51,274.

According to 2001 Census 35% of total population of Erode Town constituted the working force (age group of 18 - 58). The secondary and territory sectors were the major components at the working population, accounts to 25% and 35 % respectively. The primary sector accounts only for 5%.
Town Profile
Erode is located on the bank of river Cauvery and located in the meeting points of converging lines, of communication from major settlements of adjoining districts of Coimbatore, Trichy and Salem. It is located at a distance of 400 k.m. South west of Chennai and 100km North east of Coimbatore, 60 km South west of Salem. It is bounded on the north and east by kalingarayan channel and the Railway Line on the South. Perumpallam Odai treverses from west to East and divices the town into two parts.
Erode Corporation was consituted in the year 1871 and upgraded as special grade Municipality with effect from 1.3.1980. The extent of the Municipal town is 8.44 sq.km.
